What to see in the Athenian Riviera!

South of the Greek capital, in only a 20 minutes drive from the city center you can start exploring the amazing Athenian Riviera. Along the Mediterranean coastline, amazing marines, neighborhoods and beaches are waiting for you to explore them.

At the beginning of Athens riviera make a quick stop at the newly built Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center. The project site is located 4.5 km south of the center of Athens, on the edge of Faliro Bay, and is a complex with great green open spaces that hosts outdoor art performances. The Cultural Center will be home to the National Library of Greece and The National Opera! Visitors can access for free some parts of the building and walk to the amazing green spaces and surround areas. Athenians are truly in love with the Cultural Center!

(How to reach Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center: Either by shuttle bus  available daily to visitors, free of charge. It is a minibus bearing the SNFCC logo departs from Syntagma Square or by tram from the “Τzitzifies ” stop, walk towards the Navarhou Votsi street and then turn right at Peististratou street.At Peisistratou and Sahtouri street you will find the entrance of the SNFCC through its parking.)

Your next stop should be the Flisvos Marina. Located only 6 km from the center of Athens, provides a diversity of recreation and relaxation opportunities, while sports enthusiasts can enjoy jogging, walking between the beautiful shops and luxurious yachts and cycling activities in a friendly and peaceful environment.You can also enjoy a coffee or a meal, relax and enjoy a beautiful view of the marina. Another amazing experience in Flisvos marina is to watch open air cinema. Athenians are regular visitors especially during the weekends. Nearby Flisvos marina is a beautiful ship museum. Battleship Averof, is a floating landmark docked in the Paleo Faliro Marina. Named after Georgios Averoff  was launched in 1910 and served the Royal Hellenic Navy in the Balkan wars and both world wars. It became a museum in 1984.

Whether you are driving or taking the tram, you can watch the amazing driveway  from Floisvos marina as you are about to reach Glyfada city, which is one of the most beautiful suburb of Athens riviera. Most known as an upmarket shopping center with fashionable cafeterias and nightclubs, Glyfada has a lot more to offer such as long walks by the sea, beautiful sunsets and amazing traditional restaurants with fresh fish.

Just 2 km from Glyfada you will find Voula. Another beautiful suburb, part of the Athens Riviera, Voula offers two beautiful and well organised beaches for you to enjoy, especially during the summertime. The facilities are great and fans of water sports will have a great time there.

Right after Voula, you will reach Vouliagmeni, a small and exclusive seaside town. You can take a walk through the beautiful houses and peaceful streets or you can swim in some amazing beaches. Vouliagmeni offers a wide varieth of restaurants, from traditional tavernas to sushi bars, and of course modern cafeterias overlooking the beautiful deep blue sea. Vouliagmeni is also home to some of the most luxurious hotels and some visitors are opting staying there and reach Athens city center with public transport as day trips. The main attraction of Vouliagmeni is Vouliagmeni lake and is a hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. Situated on an idyllic landscape, this rare geological phenomenon is waiting to be discovered. The lake’s brackish waters which are continuously replenished both by the sea and the underground thermal springs offer a natural and unique thermal spa experience. The lake is a perfect opportunity for swimming and other outdoor activities. The lake is included in Greece’s national NATURA 2000 network and as a Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture.

If you  can’t get enough of the Athenias Riviera, after Vouliagmeni you will reach Varkiza. A well known tourist resort at the coastal route with beautiful bays and beaches. Here you can swim in beaches with crystal clear waters and have fun doing water sports, especially windsurfing. Do not miss fresh fish and unique seafood  in traditional taverns and ouzo.

Last but not least, you should visit Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon which is the crown jewel of the Athenian Riviera. !
